Costa Rica Adventure Day 2

Today we awoke to a fine and sunny day, warm and very pleasant. The hotel we stayed in has a really  great garden, full of lush plants and exotic flowers. We spent the time waiting for our transport by wandering around and taking pictures.
The shuttle bus arrived a little later than planned and took us to meet a larger bus and more travellers to take us to Tortuguero. We stopped on route at a small restaurant for breakfast of rice and beans, eggs fruit and coffee, which was really good.

The last 2 hours was by river which was cool and peaceful and very relaxing. We arrived in time for lunch - more rice and beans (different type of beans and cooked with coconut milk) lovely fresh veg and some great fish. You could have salad and fresh fruit of course!
We then had an hour or so of free time before taking a short boat ride to the actual village of Tortugeuro. Literately this means "many turtles " as two of the many turtle species lay their eggs on the beach. The village and all the lodges are located on a spit of land sandwiched between the sea and fresh water 'canals' which are used as highways by the locals and all the tourists as there are no roads into the area. There are numerous water birds around and the ever present black and turkey vultures circling overhead along with brown pelican squadrons making their way along the coast. The whole place has  very relaxed and laid back feel to it. We strolled back along the black volcanic sand of the beach with the crashing waves of the sea as an complement back to our lodge and then settled in for a few rums as it was about that time!

The lodge grounds are great for birding. In a short time we saw several species including one of the Orioles which was feeding on some of the Heliconia flowers.

Tomorrow we have some boat trips and a nature walk planned to fill the day, hopefully we will see some more great water birds and perhaps some Cayman and iguanas!
