Costa Rican Adventure Day 3

This morning Sarah, Andrew and myself got up early to go on the optional early morning boat trip. It had rained very heavily in the night and early morning, but as we left our chalets at 05.40 hrs the rain stopped and it cleared  up to reveal a beautiful morning, clear and warm. We took the boat only a  short distance from the lodge throughout the couple of hours of our trip, but we saw such a lot. Numerous herons,  an Anhinga drying itself in the morning sun, Spider monkey, howler  monkey and white faced Capuchin monkey,  toucans,  huge male iguanas in their bright orange breeding colours, Cayman and even an otter feeding on fish it had just caught. It was a great couple of hours of nature spotting and made getting up early really worth it!

We returned to the lodge to be greeted by the others awaiting our return. We then went straight to breakfast and enjoyed more rice and beans, eggs, pancakes , toast, really fresh fruit and wonderful coffee!  We now have a short time before our next preplanned boat trip, but as I sit here typing this it's decided to pour hard again - well it's not called rain forest for nothing!!!

Thankfully the rain stopped as we were about to go out for our second  boat trip and it kept away for the duration of our fantastic couple of hours out on the waterways. Again we saw loads of water birds,  Tiger Herons, Blue Herons,  Sungrebe, Northern Jacana, a fantastic Agami Heron and a beautiful American Pygmy Kingfisher. We were really fortunate to see an otter again hunting for fish.

On the way back we stopped under an Anhinga's nest which had two chicks in it being watched over by the mother. Amazingly within a few feet was another nest, this time with two fluffy Tiger Heron chicks staring down at us along their long slender bills! It was really great to see one nest, let alone two!

We returned for another excellent lunch and then had a short period of free time before we had a tour of the gardens of the lodge including the butterfly and poison dart frog houses. Our guide Frank also explained about the various plants and flowers found in the garden.

It was then 'rum a clock' and time to chill on our veranda enjoying the bird life in the gardens and reliving the days experiences whilst we wound down till dinner. It was a great days wildlife viewing in a beautiful location.

Tomorrow we take a light aircraft flight off the beach back to San Jose on route to our next region, the Osa Peninsula.
