Costa Rican Adventure Day 6

We were up early to go bird watching with Jacob.  Sadly it was overcast and started to drizzle  shortly after we started, so we didn't, see many birds. However we did see a lovely troop of Spider Monkeys. There we about 10 in total with several youngsters. We watched them for a while feeding happily in the top of a tree, using their tails as anchor points to reach the outer most branches, it was real treat.

After breakfast we went by boat to the nearby island called Cano.  This is another protected sight both as forest and as a marine reserve.  On the way we saw a small pod of dolphins which apparently are quite common in the area, as are whales at certain times of the year. We landed on the island to register with the rangers there. The island is occupied all year by rangers who enforce the park regulations around visitor numbers and stop illegal fishing in the marine reserve. We went snorkeling in a couple of areas close to shore. It was brilliant, very clear visibility and abundant fish. We saw parrot fish, puffer fish, a huge shoal of Jack fish, a beautiful turtle and several white-tipped sharks. It was a wonderful hour or so and truly memorable.

We returned to the mainland and wandered down to the lodges private beach. We passed the owner of the resorts house on the way which had a lovely outlook over the ocean and onto the island beyond! We then had a picnic lunch right on the beach under the palm trees with Scarlett Macaws squawking in the background and providing a colourful flypast every now and then. This was followed by a play in the crashing surf , which was pounding the beach. It was idyllic and hard to drag yourself away from. But we did and returned to our lodge chalets to freshen up and pre-pack ready for our departure tomorrow where we we will retrace our steps and travel methods to San Jose where we will meet our guide for the next  6 days. We are then off to Sarapiqui, which is lowland  rainforest.
