China Explorer Day 3

The Great Wall!

We travelled for about 2 hours out from Beijing to a less busy part of the wall at Jinshanling. We commenced our walk here on what can only be described as a spectacular section of the wall. Unlike other parts of the wall that have been heavy restored, this section which goes to Simatai, is only restored in small sections to make it safe to walk. Hence you get a a much more authentic experience - and what an experience!

The views went on for miles and miles and it was surprising clear, even though we hadn't travelled that far out of Beijing. We soon shook off the local hawkers and headed out for a truly magical walk along the wall. It is surprisingly steep in places and it doesn't take much imagination to be transported back hundreds of years to when the wall was manned and was used to protect Beijing against the Mongols.

After a glorious trek of 6 hours we arrived at Simatai. It was a marvellous experience and one that will rate as a major travel highlight. China was to add another couple of experiences to add to these highlights -details later.

After a return to Beijing the day was capped by a Peking Duck dinner - wonderful!
