The morning began with a tour by cycle rickshaw around Beijing's Hutong area. Commencing at the Bell Tower we had a convoy of rickshaws winding their way through the narrow streets. We stopped at a local kindergarten and then had an early lunch at a local family's home within the Hutong. The meal was marvelous and a wonderful authentic experience.
We then hopped onto a short flight to Xi'an. We were met by our local guide, Amber and then went straight to the city centre and the local Muslim Quarter.
Here we had a brief walk along a bustling shopping street selling all manner of fast fresh food and local goods, before we arrived at the Bell Tower situated on the imposing city walls. The enormous tower was built in 1384, but was located a short distance away. It was moved to its current location in 1582. The bell was struck each morning as a time indication for the city. Now it houses a collection of bells, chimes and musical instruments.
From here we went for an interesting 'Hot Pot' dinner. This consists of raw ingredients being placed on the table and then each person puts what they want into their personal pot, which is full of water and placed on an individual cooking stove. Added to these ingredients are spices and sauces to suit your own tastes. At the end you are left with an incredible 'soup'. Certainly an interesting and unusual way of eating your dinner!
